Bisco Hatori’s Ouran High School Host Club

Ouran High School Host Club is an entertaining group of novels that pushes good morals through comedy. In this series of books, the main focus is almost always humor. With the exception of a few serious points to further the plot, Ouran is a collection of silly people doing silly things. A poor girl named Haruhi has gotten a scholarship to the prestigious Ouran Academy. While looking for a quiet place to study, Haruhi stumbles upon music room 3 where the schools infamous Host Club takes place. Immediately she breaks an $80,000 vase and is in debt to the club. The rest of the series takes place while Haruhi is working off her debt by posing as a boy to entertain girls in the club by talking or having tea with them.

Even though there is a love story involved in the books, it manages to not become one of those cliché sappy romance novels. The entire series is lighthearted and an overall joy to read. Haruhi (along with other main characters) also express the ideals of gender equality through their accepting behavior of all genders. Haruhi’s character represents a great set of morals to strive for.

With the many main characters involved with the plot, it would be thought that it would get too confusing to keep track of all their lives. Bisco Hatori manages perfectly well to keep the wonderful back stories and fun facts about the characters well sorted. The characters all keep their individuality throughout the entire series as well, remaining loyal to their respective characteristics. Keeping devoted to consistency, the series stays on track with the wonderful story that it has both started and ended as.

With a cute plot and equally cute characters, Ouran High School Host Club is a great series to add to anyone’s personal repertoire of literature.
